 I love vacations and family trips, but I don’t love the weight gain that usually goes along with extended periods away from home. Eating out, and eating at other people’s homes, can be difficult for a healthy eater. The last time I went out of town, I wrote about eating THM-style on the road

This time as we prepared to leave town for Thanksgiving, with 16+ hours of driving and a lot of little kids in the car, I knew I would need snacks. These Trim Healthy Mama snacks are great snack ideas for anytime, but especially for a road trip! I took two cooler bags with ice packs and refrigerated the cold stuff in hotels at night. But if that had been too much trouble, we easily could have eaten the perishable items the first day.

Preparation –

Before we left, I made double batches of two of my new favorites, Trim Healthy Mama Gummies (FP) and Trim Healthy Mama Chocolate Chews (S), along with an old favorite, Sheri Graham’s Fudgy No-Bake Cookies (S). To keep Sheri’s cookies gluten-free, I used gluten-free oats.

By the way, this post contains affilate links (you can read my policy here).

For easy snacks, we stocked up on Quest bars (S), almonds (S), sprouted pumpkin seeds (S), cheese (S), apples -eaten with 1 teaspoon of peanut butter per serving -(E), and carrots (mostly for the kids).

I buy Quest bars from netrition.com, just make sure you search for the “naturally sweetened” Quest bars to find the ones that are on plan! On-plan Quest bars include: Double chunk chocolate, Strawberry cheesecake, Lemon cream pie, Coconut cashew, Banana nut muffin, Cinnamon roll, and Chocolate Peanut Butter.

Besides the Quest bars,  for these snacks I also bought peanut flour, cocoa powder, and gluten free oats (for the No Bake Cookies), AND (not pictured but equally important) Lily’s sugar-free chocolate chips (which I love to add to the no-bake cookies) and Lily’s chocolate bars.

I also packed a bag of my favorite drinks. Click here for a big list of Trim Healthy Mama-friendly drinks.

If you’re interested in a more comprehensive list of snack ideas, I have a big list of 31 THM snacks here, too.

Here’s another ridiculously bad picture for you to laugh at, of all of our snacks ready to go (except for peanut butter and Lily’s chocolate bars. I hid those from the rest of the family).

Like the outlet in the picture there? I thought you would.

Here are some notes (let’s be real – excuses) about the ridiculousness of the above photo:

1. I am not a photographer;

2. I took this photo on my way out the door for our trip;

3. I took this on my phone;

4. I am not a photographer (did I mention I’m not a photographer?).

The Quest bars in the photo AREN’T on plan! It’s super lame but I wanted to transport them in a box, and the only b0xes I had were old, so I put the on-plan bars into off-plan boxes. I hope that doesn’t confuse you too much. 🙂 One more time, for the purpose of clarity, here is the list of plan-approved Quest bars:

Double chunk chocolate, Strawberry cheesecake, Lemon cream pie, Coconut cashew, Banana nut muffin, Cinnamon roll, and chocolate peanut butter.

  1. This is great! We’re going to start a different schedule next week that’ll require us to eat lunch in the car once per week. I love the ideas for healthy, not-too-messy snacks. 🙂

    1. The letters are the different types of meals described in the Trim Healthy Mama book. When eaten in the right combinations, they promote weight loss. I really recommend the book! It helped me to lose stubborn weight, and once I got to my goal I’ve maintained the weight loss for over a year.

  2. i can’t click on your list of 31 THM snack. It doesn’t work. But the rest of the post is great!

  3. I love access bars from melalueca.com they turn fat into lean muscle and are truly delicious, trust me I have tried all kinds of supposed “health bars” that are nasty lol .

  4. Thank you so much for sharing the road trip snacks list. This will be a great help for me.

  5. Hi! I’m new to the plan but work LONG shifts as a birth doula so having snacks are easier than meals. Do you know if KIND BARS 5g sugar or Harvest Snaps (snap pea crisps) are on Plan?

    1. Hi! Kind Bars aren’t on plan (I think they taste SO GOOD, but they have too many ingredients that will raise your blood sugar), and here’s the official word on Snap Peas from THM: “Without knowing the full extent of the company’s labeling issues, we Admins cannot give a solid recommendation, one way or the other.

      Depending upon label accuracy: The oil would be “off-plan”; The rice, also, as it is likely ground white rice, so again, not really “on-plan”; serving size… pretty skimpy – so not much for a snack or meal.

      Soooo… At this point, while these may be tasty, they receive an, “eh”, from the Admins. ~ Jaque”

      I really like Kirkland brand’s low-glycemic protein bars from Costco – their chocolate chip cookie dough flavor is even better than many Quest bars, in my opinion. Sorry I don’t have better news about Kind bars. 🙁
